The Recorder's Column
Summer is here, and I hope everyone will enjoy family vacations and the warm weather.
On March 14, 15 & 16 some of Hejaz's Divan and members attended the Southeastern Shrine Association Mid-Winter planning meeting in Gatlinburg, TN. We had a good attendance and made plans for the Annual S.E.S.A. meeting scheduled for August 15 -17, 2019, at Music Road Hotel and Inn, Pigeon Forge, TN. Please plan to join us there, we need clubs and units to participate in competition and a great parade. I will be elected First V.P. in August 2019 and to President in August of 2020. Hejaz also has Noble David Wright serving as 2nd V.P. of the S.E.S.A. Motor Corp. We also have Noble John Thomas “Chatterbox” serving as the 1st V.P. of S.E.S.A. Clown Association and he will be elected as
President in August, 2019. So let’s have a large turnout for Hejaz and let it be known
that there is “No Jaz like Hejaz”. If you could assist with working the registration booth,
please let me know, as Hejaz has been assigned to work the registration table and it
takes several, we would like to have enough volunteers, so we could assign two hour
shifts. Please let me know if you can assist, Thank You.
Hejaz Circus in Anderson, Spartanburg, and Greenville, held March 22 - 31 was well
attended and enjoyed by all, our thanks to all the Circus committee and Volunteers
that worked the Circus. We appreciate the Circus Committee that works all year long
to bring us a great Circus each year; we thank them for all they do.
The Hejaz Provost Guard attended S.A.S.A. Mid-Winter planning meeting March 28 & 29, 2019, in Panama Beach, Fla. Provost Guard Captain Noble Bill Owens was elected Sgt. 4th V.P. of S.A.S.A. Provost Guard. Congratulations Bill! We also have Noble Charles Reece serving as President of the S.A.S.A. Motor Corp. Please support these Nobles and these Associations; this is a great way to inform the public of what the Shrine does, having fun in parades and competition while we support Shrine Hospitals for Children.
On June 1st, 2019, we enjoyed a wonderful evening at Golden Strip Shrine Club for
Divan and Ladies Night, had great food, one of the best bands that has played at our
Shrine Clubs “Juke Box 45”. Everyone loved the food, great music and fellowship. Thank
you Golden Strip for an excellent evening.
Nobles as reported and discussed at 2018 Imperial Session the voting representatives supported and approved moving forward with plans to realign and restructure several hospitals, including Cincinnati. The Cincinnati Hospital has 30 beds, in 2018 the average daily census was 4.1 repositioning the Cincinnati Hospital within Dayton Children’s Hospital will allow us to continue to deliver high quality burn and other services in a space that meets the needs of our patients more appropriately economically and efficiently, than a large beautiful building that is only partially used. The move to Dayton Children’s makes it possible for Shriner’s Hospital for Children to maintain its presence to Southwest Ohio providing excellent specialty care to children. As for Greenville Shrine Hospital, a meeting was held May 21, 2019, on site in Greenville to discuss a transition to the future for our Hospital with Greenville Shrine Hospital Leaders, Imperial Representatives and a consulting group. Greenville Hospital presentation pointed out many differentiators not seen in some of our sister hospitals, and attendees seemed pleased with our results and plans for the future. It was decided that Greenville should continue with their current efforts and strategies and go through the joint commission survey due between September and February, Greenville was encouraged to continue to analyze and consider alternate models of care. Shriners Hospitals total U.S. inpatient volume has decreased by 31 percent from 2013 to 2017 at the same time, operating expenses for inpatient visits have increased by 60 percent. Continuing to operate indefinitely as a system designed primarily for inpatient care is just not financially feasible or efficient any longer. If we all work toward our mission of providing excellent specialty care in the most feasible way, we will successfully transfer our health care system for a strong respected second hundred years.
Nobles please consider attending your shrine clubs and units as well as Hejaz Shrine Quarterly meetings, check your commentator for coming events and attend

For those of you that don’t know we have a Hejaz Shrine Center project once a year selling genuine Vidalia Sweet Onions, we need everyone to help sell these onions. They come in either 5 lb. or 10 lb. bags.
Each Shrine Club and Units can ask their members how manythey can sell and give us a total number at the Seminar and be sure to indicate what size of bags. We normally order between 25,000 to 30,000 so please help us sell them, this is a good way to build your Crown of Honor Points also.
We suggest all Clubs and Units do projects for themselves, the Shrine Center and the Hospital and this could be one of your Shrine Center projects. Remember Shrine Club Presidents and Unit Captains we need this information on February 9th. We order the onions in March and we receive them around the first week of May. Talk it up and let’s try to sell 30,000 lbs. this year, and we will Thank You.
